Q: How do I maintain a grounded spiritual practice amidst my daily responsibilities and challenges?
A: This question implies a perhaps unconscious view that spiritual practice requires a ton of time and energy. That is true in one sense; images of monks sitting in silent contemplation for hours and hours may be clouding your sense of what it means to engage with practice. The monk reality is just one side of it. It's a valuable reality, but isn't realistic for most of us.
For me, I consider myself a folk tantric. I'm a householder: a spiritual aspirant who is still living & loving in the world; outside of the monastery. Perhaps I'll end up there someday, but for now: I've got a stepkid, I've got a full time job, and relationships with friends, family, and a partner. So, for me, grounding into practice isn't about escaping everyday life; it’s about finding ways to bring spiritual presence into it.
Small rituals—like a 5 minute devotional practice (that I teach about here)— can help you to bridge the space between the mundane and the sacred. Shifting your view of reality can be tremendous as well. Here are some serious questions that seem really simple:
What is God to you? What is reality to you?
These seem like really simple questions but the answers you give to them change everything.
If God is an entity that controls the universe who exists exclusively outside of yourself... well, that belief will re-enforce an experience of separation within yourself.
If reality is seen as a Dance of the One God who plays all of the roles... every part of life starts getting a lot more spiritual because you're choosing to live in a way where you see yourself moving through Her body in every moment.
Our view of reality is a choice that can change EVERYTHING.
But, living into that worldview shift is a practice, as well. This is stuff I teach about in mentorship. Practice isn't just about doing things like ritual and meditation. It's also about honing our perception in our everyday reality.
But... to leave off: Give yourself the gift of regularly pausing and checking in with your body and mind and breath and heart. This is the simplest practice that yields the sweetest results. Taking 5 minutes to sink into who you are RIGHT NOW and what it's like to BE YOU (through a body / mind scan) can be a tremendous practice. So many of us chronically ignore ourselves and lose out on the valuable information that's waiting for us in the present moment. Spirituality can become woven into every breath, every choice, and every relationship. You just gotta take some first steps and start orienting your life around that.
